La Catrina Quartet

Taking its name from a popular Mexican folk icon, La Catrina Quartet has as its mission to perform and promote Latino composers alongside the masterworks of classical repertoire. In Residence at New Mexico State University, LCSQ tours regularly throughout the US and Mexico. They have received important awards and recognition, such as being selected for the Association of Performing Arts Presenters’ highly competitive Young Performers Career Advancement program in New York City, which concluded with a showcase performance of “next generation’s classical music star performers” at Carnegie Hall.

Some of the quartet’s recent highlights include their participation on the CD “Brasileiro” which won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Classical Recording in 2012. LCSQ commissioned a new work, Cuarteto No. 2, from Puerto Rican composer Roberto Sierra, which they premiered at New York City’s Symphony Space in May of 2011 at the new music festival, Wall to Wall Sonidos, receiving high praise from the New York Times: “The premiere of Roberto Sierra’s ‘Cuarteto para Cuerdas No. 2’ [was] vividly rendered by La Catrina Quartet”.

Other rave reviews from the national press include: “Mexico is known more for its mariachis than its string quartets, but the La Catrina Quartet [is helping] change some assumptions . . . youthful energy and mature artistry” (Los Angeles Times); “this could be the next Mexican-based quartet to watch out for . . . a blast of shimmering contemporary energy” (Santa Barbara News-Press).  Yo-Yo Ma said, “how wonderful to hear four young musicians be such good ambassadors for music!”

Last summer, the La Catrina Quartet was honored to receive an invitation to perform as soloists with the Orquesta Filarmónica de la Ciudad de México for the opening gala concert of the Festival del Centro Histórico, one of Mexico's most prestigious concert series. Next season the quartet is slated to perform in several important venues in Mexico as well as in Europe.

The quartet is currently embarking on a project to record and release four CDs of Mexican, Latin-American and European string quartet music as well as a collaborative recording with renowned tuba player James Shearer and a recording of works for string quartet and various instruments by American composer Zae Munn.

From 2007-2009, LCSQ was Quartet in Residence with the Western Piedmont Symphony in North Carolina and at the Chamber Music Festival of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where they collaborated with the Brentano Quartet, the Poulenc Trio and the Miami Quartet.

The 2011-2012 Chapel Series season featured three concerts, each performed twice. NMPAS will seek to gradually increase this number to nine concerts each season, presented monthly from September through May.

Winter Solstice Celebration featured vocal music with New York City Opera soprano Jane Thorngren, mezzo-soprano Sarah Ihlefeld, flutist Linda Marianiello, and pianist Franz Vote.

These highly successful performances were followed by the Second Annual Valentine’s Concert, Stirring Passions, with Nancy Laupheimer and Linda Marianiello, flutes, Sally Guenther, cello, and Debra Ayers, piano.

And in May 2012, the series presented Jazz in the Chapel: Arrangements and Original Compositions by Santa Fe-based pianist-composer John Rangel and Friends.
